Growing up overnight

I watch TV very rarely. Last evening I got an opportunity to watch a movie called The Impossible . It is a very good depiction of the horrors of Tsunami .

A family of five had set off on a holiday to a beautiful place called Kalapao in Thailand . Golden clean beach and beautiful serene sea. It is a true story of how this family experienced the horrors of near death, excruciating pain, separation and how they survived the entire ordeal.

The main hero of this movie was the young boy Lucas who was I guess 11. However the way he gathered all his guts, strength and saved his mother was remarkable and astonishing as well.  There were many teachings one can find,  but my mind was on how Lucas grew overnight into a responsible , caring, compassionate , introspective , matured person who not only saved his mother,  but on his mother's instructions also went on to help others find their near and dear ones. He was a boy who could not tolerate his younger brothers fear responses and here he was oblivious to the dirt and grime, and faced the most difficult situation of his life with sometimes even a smile . The expressions of Lucas are just spellbinding in the film .

The story left me thinking that every individual has this one episode or a trauma, or many episodes which kind of gives that jump to growing up overnight from a protected child to a mature person . I was also trying to search for the time when this happened to me.

I could think of one terrible incident in the family when I was 19 and how overnight I took a decision to be the breadearner of the family . I also went still further down and realized that I was almost a mother to my brother when I was 8.

However when I was introspection further,  I realized that I was never a complete child and now also I m not a complete grown up.

It is true that we must keep the child in us alive always ,  but I feel that I took the role of a mature person very early in life.  In fact when my husband met me at age 19,he says he was attracted as I was a very mature person at that age itself. Thus I guess some grow overnight and some are grown already on the night they are born. Don't wish to sound sarcastic , but some also never do grow up .

The most beautiful line of the movie which kept reiterating was when in distress , close ur eyes and think of something nice.

With Magical love

Circumstances force one into maturity before time and that maturity does not allow one to go back to childhood

I agree Nora, once matured, even if the child surfaces, there are raised eyebrows.
