Watching TV is not something I would do by choice very often. However if the TV is on and I happen to be in the drawing room, then I would just sit for sometime and watch, or even get interested and see the entire program.
Recently I was watching a small show with my son and I happened to focus on the advertisement of wherein a young man is confronted by his parents as to why should their daughter in law continue to go out and work, when he has got a promotion. The daughter in law freezes in her footsteps right at the edge of the door she was about to enter with the dinner dish. She hears her husband replying in a very firm and calm manner to his parents. Mom, Dad, she is working because she like to work and not for money.
The daughter in law smiles and remembers that she had mentioned this on one of the chats to the man she was going to marry that she wishes to continue to work even after marriage. The advertisement is of Bharat Matrimony.
What struck me here is the depiction of respecting a wish, keeping a word and also the young man handling the situation gaining further respect and love from his wife.
The expressions on her face and the thoughts in her mind clearly indicate that she feels loved and respected. She feels the man stood for her with a very calm posture. The man did not leave the parents speechless, he just made it all clear in just one statement.
There was no melodrama, no hesitation, no offence but plain use of assertive skills with calmness.
One of the skills that parents need to teach children in order to have a hi emotional quotient is assertive skill with a blend of respect.
The four pillars according to me of a healthy relationship are Love, Respect, Space and Trust.
One without the other leads to several small betrayals which in turn leads to many couples living a life of compromise.
So parents please teach your children not just to respect elders, but to respect themselves, respect the wishes, keep their word and stand up for people.
